Netball – a brief overview
Netball originated in the USA and bears some resemblance to basketball. The aim of the game is to throw the netball into the hoop/ring of the opposing team. The court measures 30.5×15.25 metres and is divided into three sections known as thirds. Each of the two teams has 7 players. There are two scoring rings, one at each end of the court. The rings are right in the middle of the backline and each surrounded by a semicircle with a radius of 4.9 metres. Unlike in basketball, there is no backboard, and each player is assigned with a specific role and is only permitted to play in certain thirds of the court. The netball must be touched in each third. The rules are strict: a pass cannot take any longer than 3 seconds and the ball must not be dribbled.
