How to use the Pertra "Classification" educational toys
"Inductive reasoning" is trained in the cycle of exercises 1–3. This is a key requirement for learning in schools.
Exercise 1: "Replicating patterns"
A grid is placed on the base. The child is given a shape, either a pre-made one on the board or a template on a piece of paper, and they have to recreate it using the pieces provided. The level of difficulty can be increased by removing the grid.
Exercise 2: "Continuing the sequence"
At least 4 insert boards are placed in a sequence on the base. The child must recognise the pattern in the top sequence and decide which piece comes next. They can choose pieces from the given pool, depending on the level of difficulty. This exercise trains convergent thinking.
Exercise 3: "Invariance of surface"
A surface can change a classic shape (triangle, square, rectangle) without changing its size. Here, a square serves as the reference size. The child has to try to fill the square insert in the board with the pieces provided, thus discovering that the pieces are all a quarter of the reference size.
Exercise 4: "Recognising qualities"
The child must, for example, find all of the triangles and mark them with an object. The child practises recognising characteristics and includes all of the shapes that match all the qualities of a triangle in the "triangle" category.
